5 Ways to Keep a Dog Happy & Healthy

We all love our pups unconditionally and want them to live the best life possible. Our Gardena vets give five tips on how to keep a dog happy and healthy during their daily routine.

Provide Appropriate Play Time & Exercise

Exercise and playtime aren't only good for your dog's physical health, it also helps strengthen their mental health. Swimming, playing fetch, or going on brisk walks are some daily exercises that will let your furry friend burn off some excess energy.

Toys and games that are mentally stimulating (like a puzzle toy/feeder) are great ways to exercise your dog's mind.

Without play or exercise, dogs would live a pretty boring life. A bored dog will have to find a way to have its own fun, often in a form of destruction and chaos.

Train Your Dog Continuously

Some pet owners may feel like they have completed training after their dog has learned the basic commands (sit, lay down etc.).  Training your dog continuously gives you a fun way to challenge and entertain your dog's mind.

Our dogs look forward to learning new behaviors, especially when we use positive reinforcement to teach them.

Training will also help your dog better understand what is expected of him, reducing their confusion and frustration, and making them more confident.

A training session will also give you some quality one-on-one time that both pet and parent can enjoy.

Give Your Dog Some Choices Throughout the Day

Humans require freedom in our lives, and the same goes for dogs. As an owner, you probably decide when your pet eats, sleeps, goes to the bathroom etc., so giving your dog a bit of say in their day-to-day is an easy way to bring them joy.

Small decisions that your dog will enjoy making could be something like letting them pick which toy to play with or letting them decide which direction to go while taking a walk.

Allowing them to be off-leash is very exciting for dogs who aren't used to it on a regular basis, but this should only be done when it is legal and safe to do so.

Provide Plenty of Chew Toys

Dogs love to chew and often destroy their toys. This is one of their ways of having a good time, while also expressing their natural instincts.

Look for some durable toys that won't need to be thrown out after a few uses. Also, try to supply a variety of different types of chew toys so your pet has options.

Toys that can hold a treat inside are exciting for dogs to play with, and edible toys like dental bones are fun for your dog, while also great for their oral health.

Consider Learning Doggie Massage Techniques

It's no secret that most dogs love to cuddle and be petted. Try to learn your pup's favorite spots to be pet or scratched, and stick to those spots especially when you want to reward them.

There are certain massage techniques that you can learn, and your dog will love. Massages will help your dog relax and can ease their tired muscles as well as anxiety.
